“The Pledge to Eliminate Poverty” Please respond to the following:

The Millennium Development Goals were created to provide developing countries support through the partnership of developed countries. One of these goals was to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger” in the world. How successful do you feel these goals have been in achieving their mission? [Sources: United Nations. 2019. In the first half of the century, there was strong economic growth, resulting in reduction in the people living in extreme poverty. But the increase caused an economic crisis in the U.S. and other countries with a decline in exports and trade and foreign investments. This shift led to an additional 50 million people living in extreme poverty in 2008-09. Undaunted, however, the UN’s Millennium Development Goal achieved its goal of reducing the poverty level indicated in 1990. But while that was an exceptional effort, people in a number of countries still suffered from no electricity, lack of adequate nutrition, clean drinking water, and adequate sanitation. In fact, some countries became poorer.

The millennium development goals have target eight key areas – poverty, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, disease, the environment and global partnership. Each goal is supported by 21 specific targets and more than 60 indicators. According to the data blog, The Guardian, there has been consistent progress at each of the goal levels. To name a few,

The child mortality rate has reduced by more than half over the past 25 years

The global maternal mortality ratio has fallen by nearly half

New HIV infections have fallen by approximately 40%

Over 2 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water since 1990 and the target of halving the proportion of people without access to improved sources of water was achieved five years ahead of schedule in 2010

No doubt these are great achievements. But when there are still 836 million people living on less than $1.25 a day and suffering from hunger or 663 million people across the world still do not have access to improved drinking water, there is still much work to do to reach the goals set. One notable is that the UN’s ambitions should become those of us in a position to help. For example, we can donate to legitimate organizations and provide assistance and a voice in the planning and developing approaches. I think we’re on the right track as the text indicates that international development assistance rose 6.1 percent in 2013, the highest level of development aid on record: $134.8 billion.
