According to Myers and Noebel (2015) \”Postmodernism says no one can have unmediated, direct or immediate access to reality.\” All that this previous statement says is what God has already provided to the His believers. The postmodernist denial and rejection of reality is their sole objective into its narrative of what they think is truth. The Christian worldview have views rooted in sphere sovereignty special creation that outlines out biological and social beliefs whereas postmodernism anti-realism, essentialism and a decentered self is the language of truth that they believe in. Christianity stands on what is factual, real and truthfulness as a means of connecting to all of the beatitudes that God has to offer. The two views may share a common belief in scientific materialism that through science nature reveals itself but God does the revealing for man to explore. Colossians 2:8 \”See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.\”

As we learned earlier in our studies, according to Myers and Noebel, Christianity is a theistic worldview centered on the person of Jesus Christ. Christianity derives the understanding of the world through the teachings of the Holy Bible. It is the belief that God makes himself known in nature and the Bible (Myers and Noebel p. 28 and 29). So, what is a Postmodernism? A Postmodernist denies all worldviews and sees the claims that other worldviews offer unbiased truth about the world. In this week\’s lesson, Vanhoozer talked about seven assumptions on which Postmodernism rests. Out of the seven, I would like to share #5, which says, \”Postmodernists reject the idea of \”God,\” or at least our ability to gain a God\’s eye view of the world; we have to draw meaning out of the world for ourselves.\” (Myers and Noebel, p. 150)

The rejection of God is not pleasing from a Christian point of view. God tells us that He created the heavens and earth. He also said in Philippians 4:5-8, which states, \”Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. the Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.\” God is Awesome!

Theism, Pantheism, and Atheism are three mutually exclusive beliefs about God. I have observed all three of these belief systems in my career in the health care field. When diagnosed with a terminal disease, the atheist trusts only in the science of medicine to heal. The atheist acknowledges death and recognizes that death is a natural part of the evolutionary process and thereby focuses on getting joy out of authentic living (DuToit, 2009). A pantheist, on the other hand, would consider the medicine, the instruments of medical treatments, and the professionals to all be equally divine. Like the atheist, the pantheist does not seek an all-powerful, sovereign God when medicine fails to cure, because everything is equally God. They would only be able to put their hope in some better reincarnated state in the future. Therefore, the only people that have hope for healing when science and medicine fail and the possibility of peace, contentment and eternal life are the theists. They put their hope in the wisdom, power, and eternal purposes of God.

According to Myers and Noebel, Atheism, Pantheism, and Theism are the three basic possibilities about God and the six worldviews we\’ve been studying are variations on one of these three beliefs. Starting with Atheism which believes there is no God. Their beliefs are in human potential to achieve good and unlike Christianity they strongly oppose to the belief in the supernatural, while we as Christians recognize the presence of God in our lives and the Trinity. Three of the six worldviews we\’ve studied are categorized as Atheist. Secularist worldview which admit to nothing higher than human life; Marxist worldview which believe the theology that God, whether known as a supreme being, creator, or divine ruler, does not, cannot, and must not exist; and Postmodernist, who are atheist by consequence says that belief in God is a socially constructed story of the world and since no story is true, it follows that no God exists. The next possibility is Pantheism which believe that the divine dwells within everyone and every created thing, however, we as Christians believe that the Spirit lives in God\’s people and Pantheist do not recognize a distinct personal god. New Spirituality worldview is considered Pantheist who believe that everything is God. Then there is Theism which believe in the existence of at least one deity. Islam worldview is considered monotheism, those who believe in one God who exists, who created the world, and who will one day hold humans to account. Unlike Christianity, Muslims rejected the doctrine of the Trinity, the idea that God eternally exist as three distinct persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They also reject the idea that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. In the Christianity worldview which is also monotheism, we believe that God starting from Genesis 1:1, \”In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.\” This one sentence proclaims a God who is active in and yet separate from His creation. Christianity is unwaveringly monotheism.
