political platforms
This section of the course has closely examined The Cultural Myth of the Model Family through socio – historical lenses. The careful blends of narrative, academic prose, political platforms and visual texts have, in their uniqueness, explored diverse notions of family.
Write an expository piece where you develop your notion (idea) of family. As you construct your argument consider asking yourself the following questions: 1.) What in the reading selections makes me believe this notion of family? 2.) What personal experience drives my perspective of family? 3.) What in the reading selections support, challenge or complicate my notion of family?
GUIDELINES
**Your response should come in a 4 -5 page, double-spaced, properly MLA formatted essay. Be sure to also include a works cited page, which does not count as one of the required four composed pages.
Critical Essay Components: Purpose, Hook, Thesis, Structure
Consider purpose, audience, voice and media
What is my / your purpose?
To compose an Expository Essay.
What is an Expository Essay?
Anytime you inform, explain, examine, discuss or interpret in writing.
What is my / your purpose of an Expository Essay?
To share information with your reader. To pass on as much valuable information as you can about the topic.
Identifying my/ your audience or “discourse community”
My/Your Voice: Closely connected to your purpose and audience is the voice and persona you present to readers. How do you want to come across to them? What impressions do you want them to form of you as a person, of your values and opinions? Can and should I use the first person pronoun “I”?
Example #1 In the first section of my paper, I want to make the point that the spread of technology is damaging personal relationships.
Example #2 The first section of this paper will examine the point that the spread of technology is damaging personal relationships.
Hook: Imagine “hooking” in your audience the way a one hooks a fish on a line. Often used as a way of engaging your audience, you should consider hooks when you begin an essay. Hooks can be a famous (or not) quote, description of a scenario, facts / statistics, a current event or even posing a rhetorical question. A hook is often the opener to the essay and resides in the introductory paragraph of your assignment.
Thesis / Controlling Idea
Suppose someone was to ask you, “What is the main idea that you want to communicate to your reader in your piece of writing?” The sentence you would give in reply is your thesis statement. Controlling idea is another way of thinking about the thesis. Implied here is that you are setting forth a central idea that will control your essay. In other words, it is the point you wan to make.
Your thesis stimulates curiosity and interest in readers and prompts them to think, “Why do you say that ?” and then to read on and be convinced by what you have written.
Your thesis forecasts and unifies all that follows in your essay; it does not include ideas or points that you do not intend to discuss in your essay.
Your thesis is expressed concisely in once or two complete sentences (though you will come across many variations as you read)

The creators of this website acknowledge that there is debate over the strict definitions and characteristics of the various academic modes of writing. It is often the case that most academic modes of composition do not exist in isolation of one another, but often times overlap. For example, one must expose an issue and provide as much background information when developing an argumentative essay meant to persuade an audience. It is important to note the strategies employed in each mode especially as we develop our writing skills. One of the many important things to consider is your purpose for writing and the fact that you are not writing in a vacuum but in a community of readers and writers.
