Around the world healthcare facilities are struggling with the rising costs and uneven quality despite the hard work of well intentioned trained clinicians. Healthcare leaders and policy makers have tried many of times to fix and reduced errors and enforcing practice guidelines but none have had an impact yet. The way healthcare providers are paid also has an impact on health care expenditure. Some payment methods provide incentives while others provide little incentive to deliver high quality care. To help contain health expenditure, policymakers could consider supplementing or combining fee for service and methods with others that are better able to constrain expenditure growth.
