Argue for a fact, value, or policy surrounding a social issue of your choice.

This week you will put into practice everything you have learned about introductions, conclusions, organizing, and outlining. Download and use one of these outline templates to create a rough draft of your own speech outline. Refer to the Speaking Assignment Details – Persuasive Speech for specific speech requirements as they will also guide your outline process. Your persuasive speech will argue for a fact, value, or policy surrounding a social issue of your choice. Whichever type of claim you choose to argue (fact, value, or policy), be clear which one you are choosing in your central idea statement. This speech should broadly explain a problem or controversy and offer a compelling argument or solution for it. You may use any of the persuasive speech organization structures discussed in the persuasive speaking modules, but it should make sense for both your topic and your method of presenting the argument.

A completed outline will include:

  • all 5 elements of the introduction
  • a body with 2–4 main points (It is okay if you have more or fewer sub-points than indicated on the template, as long as every 1 has a 2 and every “a” has a “b.”)
  • clear transition statements between main points
  • a conclusion with an appropriate clincher
  • references three (3) sources cited in correct APA format
  • only one complete sentence per outline point
  • follows the APA style for outlines (follow the template’s formatting)
  • include your presentation aid or the plan for your presentation aid

Tips for an effective outline

  • Use one of the attentions getting devices discussed in this week’s module.
  • Your credibility statement should include your passion and your expertise.
  • Transition statements should include a review and a preview.
  • Use one of the organizational patterns discussed in this week’s module.
  • Paraphrase source information in the Body of the outline (see your textbook for examples).

NB: The topic of choice is the importance of sleep; I want my audience to reinforce a belief. My main point:

A. Effects of sleep deprivation on health
B. How quality sleep promotes human wellbeing
