Hi Dallrie! I enjoyed reading your post. I wanted to elaborate on your point about planned or abrupt termination. According to Abramson (2022), it is ideal to avoid an abrupt termination, as this could lead to the client feeling abandoned and missing the opportunity to cement their therapeutic gains. So, transitioning and talking about termination is an important aspect of the therapeutic relationship and should be handled with care.

However, there are specific times for an abrupt termination. Abramson (2022) states, “If a patient threatens or assaults the therapist, clinicians can terminate treatment immediately without a termination phase” (para. 5). So, depending on the client and the circumstances between terminations, a planned or abrupt termination will be used. Ideally, the termination includes a termination phase, but if your safety is in jeopardy, this is not necessary.
