Personality disorders

Personality disorders are hard to diagnose within a client. In all honesty, everyone has natural mood swings and a change in personality from time to time, but when it’s actually happening in reality where a person is suffering from a type of personality disorder, it is a serious matter that needs to be addressed.

Antisocial Personality Disorder is a good example of one of the many personality disorders. There is no actual known cause as to what causes this disorder, only speculation. Though, I believe that antisocial personality disorder stems from a persons childhood. Childhood trauma is a very real and serious thing, and often shapes a person into who they are. If a person spent their whole childhood/life in isolation, or strict set of rules and beliefs that kept them from speaking out, it could result in them being antisocial. A person who was bullied could also be a potential victim of antisocial personality disorders. I also believe that disorders can be passed down genetically, so a person may just also be destined to have it. It’s important that as future counselors, we pay close attention to details and characteristics to ensure we are diagnosing clients with a form of personality disorder accurately.
