Person-Centered Therapy

Hello Everyone,

In my opinion, change in the counseling process happens when a client experiences a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment. The counseling relationship is the foundation where healing and transformation begin. When clients feel genuinely heard, accepted, and understood, they are more likely to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors openly. This process leads to insight, which fosters personal growth and positive change (Rogers, 1957).

I believe change also requires client motivation, self-awareness, and the ability to connect therapeutic insights to meaningful goals. Change is not linear—it happens gradually through reflection, consistency, and encouragement. Counselors help facilitate this by offering empathy, validating experiences, and gently challenging unhelpful patterns (Corey, 2017).

The theory that most aligns with my beliefs is Person-Centered Therapy. Carl Rogers emphasized the importance of empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard as the “necessary and sufficient conditions” for therapeutic change (Rogers, 1957). These principles resonate with my belief that people have the inner resources to grow when provided with the right environment. This approach prioritizes the client’s autonomy and empowers them to take ownership of their healing process.
