The aspect of relaxing at the workplace is impressive, and you are right; Google has been very innovative in having that as a part of their work culture. It would be fantastic if healthcare organizations could adopt some policy that allows their over-worked providers the ability to rest while at work. The challenges of the job, constantly working to save or improve a patient’s life, is very stressful, especially in today’s pandemic environment. I know that there have been many days in my healthcare career that I wish I could have had a few hours to decompress at work during the workday.
Healthcare organizations have the challenge of balancing patient care with team member satisfaction. Management must consider the patient’s welfare by not allowing the providers to be overworked. Providers must have time to re-energize and regroup to provide quality care. There is a point to be reached when the healthcare provider is too stressed or overworked to care for their patients, which is when mistakes happen, and the patient’s welfare is affected. Healthcare management should always be mindful of their providers’ hours and adjust accordingly before affecting patient care.
