This week’s readings discuss various philosophies of organizational communication
Questions
1. This week’s readings discuss various philosophies of organizational communication, showing that the way we think about organizational communication has evolved during the past several decades. In your view, which approach to organizational communication is the most helpful or accurate? Why?
2. Communications theorists today often see communication not as a “package” in which a message is “transmitted” clearly and without interpretation. Instead, they might subscribe to theories such as Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of “dialogue, in which many voices develop many messages and many interpretations during the act of communication–messages and interpretations that are dependent on the social context in which the communication is taking place (Bakhtin, 1981). How might some of the examples in some of our readings display this “multivocality”?
Bakhtin, M. M. (1981). The dialogic imagination. Four essays by M. M. Bakhtin (M. Holquist, Ed.; C. Emerson & M Holquist, Trans.). Austin, TX: University of Texas Press.
