Gene One is a very young company and the fact that none of the managers have any experience with change adds to the problems they are facing. Even those with experience can still suffer the various stress symptoms described in Organizational Behavior. Add to that the individual sources of resistance and those found in the structural makeup of organizations and perhaps Gen One starts to appear as a rather classic case of mixing perceptions, personalities and widely varied needs. Do you think that fear of losing control is probably the most prevalent fear of all among the resisting leaders?
Class, does a review of Exhibit 19-2 (Sources of Resistance to Change) help to better understand the naysayers? I think the comment in Chapter 19’sPoint Counterpoint: Managing Change Is an Episodic Activity is one worth pondering: “If you want to understand what its like to manage change in today’s organizations, think of it as equivalent to permanent white-water rafting” (Robbins & Judge, 2011).
