Advanced practice nurses can play an important role in globalization and international health in many ways. One easy way that advanced practice nurses can get involved is through nursing organizations (p. 619). Being involved in nursing organizations allows nurses to advocate in large numbers and be represented in local, state, and federal legislation.
The Sustainable Development Goals were developed in 2015 and were designed to work towards the vision of a “world free of poverty, hunger, disease and want” (World Health Statistics, n.d.). Advanced practice nurses can play a huge role in working to achieve these goals. Working locally to improve the health of their own community is a great starting point. Educating patients on the importance of preventive care and chronic care management is important. There are also opportunities in many communities where advanced practice nurses can practice in free clinics and serve the underprivileged.
In reviewing the Sustainable Development Goals a lot of them are issues that we have addressed during this class, communicable disease, healthcare coverage, substance abuse, tobacco abuse, etc. (World Health Statistics, n.d.). The Sustainable Development Goal for communicable disease states that the goal is to “end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases, and other communicable diseases” (SDG Target 3.3 Communicable Diseases, 2023). Looking back on assignment 3, my health issue with a global impact was hepatitis. Advanced practice nurses can make a great impact on the number of local hepatitis cases by educating their patients on the importance of immunizations for hepatitis A and B. They can provide education on how to prevent hepatitis C such as not participating in activities such as the sharing of needles and other equipment used to prepare and inject drugs.
