For this Performance Task Assessment, you will create a presentation for a group of new nurses who are being oriented to your facility. Within your presentation, you will define key terms concerning research, patient safety, and quality improvement. In addition, you will present a specific example of a nurse-led quality or safety improvement project from the professional literature that has been published in the past five years. Use the AHRQ QIs as a guide in your selection of the nurse-led project. (https://www.qualityindicators.ahrq.gov/)
Presentation for New Nurses
The nursing director of your healthcare facility requests that you present to a group of new nurses who are being oriented to your facility. You are asked to define key terms concerning research, patient safety, and quality improvement. In addition, you will present a specific example of a nurse-led quality or safety improvement project from the professional literature that has been published in the past five years. Use the AHRQ QIs as a guide in your selection of the nurse-led project. You are eager to share the contributions that nurses have made to healthcare quality and patient safety using evidence-based solutions.
In healthcare, performance needs to be gauged using multidimensional, accessible measures to ensure that patients are receiving high-quality care. One response to this need is the use of QI that are developed and maintained by the AHRQ.
QIs are currently organized into four modules: the Prevention Quality Indicators (PQIs), the Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQIs), the Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs), and the Pediatric Quality Indicators (PDIs). These QIs can be used to identify variations in the quality of care provided on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
For your presentation, include 10–12 slides that address the following:
Provide brief definitions of research, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and quality improvement. (3–4 slides)
Choose one specific AHRQ quality indicator to address (for example, PSI 02: Death Rate in Low-Mortality Diagnosis Related Groups [DRGs]) and find an article from the Walden Library published in the last five years that describes the involvement of nurses in that particular type of quality improvement activity. Then address the following:
Describe the specific quality indicator that you selected, and summarize the article concerning that particular quality area. (3–4 slides)
Be sure to include the article’s title and author. (For example, if you choose PSIs, you will want to describe what research has been done to eliminate or minimize safety-related adverse events following operations, procedures, and childbirth.)
Explain why the demands for quality improvement are increasing. Give at least two reasons and include any data that supports the use of quality improvement measures. (2 slides)
Describe 1–2 additional ways nurses are leading quality and safety improvements in healthcare. (2 slides)
