Great day class and instructor Christie! Pleasantville is a movie about this young high school kid named David who is devoted and obsessed over a family television show called Pleasantville. David has a sister named Jennifer who is a fun filled teen who wants to invite someone over to watch a show at the same time that the Pleasantville marathon is supposed to air. Eventually they start fighting back and forward over who gets the tv and starts tugging at the remote when it broke. Out of nowhere this mysterious tv repair man comes and gives the teens a remote that puts David and Jennifer into the Pleasantville show where it is a simple black and white pictured, poodle skirt way of living. Gender roles is one of the biggest themes in Pleasantville, dictated by the society where males are considered to be superior and the women are lesser than men. (Prezi.com) David took into the lifestyle of his favorite show while Jennifer on the other hand was still stuck in her ways of their modern life. Whenever they did anything that never happened in the show or did anything that was against the social norms, they would turn from black and white to color. Holding hands was the normal thing to do for them. Jennifer arrived introduced the people of Pleasantville to kissing and sex which also turned the black and white television characters into color characters. There was even one point in the movie where things got so bad that David said, “Hell, you could have a food any minute! Pretty soon, the women could be going off to work, while the men stayed at home and cooked!” That pointed out the gender specific roles of the movie.
