A key element of the narrative essay is to stay focused and narrow the topic. It is common to begin with a general topic, but then it tries to cover ‘too’ much. For example, the general topic of returning to school is broad. Was there a specific event or experience you could write about on the decision, and include specific details and strong descriptions? Keep in mind descriptions can be physical and emotional, and the goal is to re-create the scene and bring the reader along for the journey during a narrative essay. Feelings are just as important as describing the physical surroundings. This is a personal essay, and not research-based, so include as much or as little personal information as you feel is appropriate.
