Hello Class,
Thank you for your great responses so far to the discussion topics for this week. I want to add a resource that you may find helpful as your finish this week’s assignments. It may also be a tool for you if and when you work with older adults in the future. The American Psychological Association has published guidelines for working with older adults. Many of the items we are discussing this week like socioeconomic status, end of life issues, and adjustment to developmental milestones like retirement are considered. Please take a look at the guidelines and let me know what you think. This is the type of resource that is good to bookmark in your browser for future use.
One excellent point made in the guidelines about working with older adults is the amount of loss they have experienced. Not only the loss of a spouse to death or separation, or from ones children and grandchildren caused by an empty nest, seniors experience layers of loss that need to be addressed in mental health counseling. What are some ways that you as a counselor could help a senior who is experiencing loss?
