Veronica Esposito,
I think in this case I would try the natural way of conception, because this young man’s schizophrenia is manageable. Also, there is a good chance that their children won’t have schizophrenia, and if they there can be closely monitored. I don’t think I would seek prenatal diagnosis, because they are risky for the unborn child. What if the unborn child is tested positive, are the parents having an abortion? I think any couple that decides to have a child, with a parent that has schizophrenia, has to be prepared for the possibility that they children might have it too. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t see the point for the prenatal testing.
Victoria Peterson,
I would adopt. Given my situation and understanding the struggles of mental health issues, I would much rather take in a kid who is already here and in need of a home. If my life is fulfilled and I want children, why not give blessings to a kid who is without a family? I don’t think it’s worth the risk of bringing a child into a mental state that I had to medically treat myself. Regardless of prenatal diagnosis and such, it just seems to me that adoption would a good route that benefits everyone involved.
