The Bowen theory was pioneered by Murray Bowen a medical doctor from Tennessee. Bowen based his theory on two concepts; individuality and togetherness. Individuality is where therapy focuses on a person as an individual while togetherness comes in when a family’s emotional system is based on the history of the family. While too much togetherness prevents individuality, too much individuality leads to a distant family set.

                Bowen introduced eight concepts, six of which identify emotional systems taking place in both the nuclear and extended family while two explain the emotional process in the family generation.
