Handout 7.1: THE LIVING LIBRARY: BECOMING MORE FLEXIBLY ETHNOCENTRIC
Instructions: Identify a cultural group that seems very different from your own and that you don’t know much about. It could be an age group that is much older or younger than your own, a religious or pollical group that you don’t understand, or an ethnic or racial group you don’t know much about, just to a name a few possibilities. Next, follow the steps in PART 1 to create some interview questions geared toward increasing your understanding of that culture. Then, seek someone of that culture and ask if you might talk to for a while to learn more about each other. Use the questions you’ve developed as you talk with that person. Finally, reflect on the experience by answering the question in PART 2 of this activity.
PART 1: Developing Interview Questions
Develop some interview questions by asking yourself what it is about the culture that seems so different from your own culture. This may include behavior patterns, styles or dress, the basis of belief systems, and so on.
Brainstorm a list of things you’ve noticed, and then turn those factors into questions. Your questions should be as diplomatic and respectful as possible.

PART 2: Reflecting on the Experience
Whom did you choose to interview and why? Attach a list of the questions you asked to this assignment when you turn it in.
What assumptions did you have about the person and about his or her culture before you did your interview? Give a few specific examples, along with what you based each assumption on. Be honest!
What did you learn about the person and his or her culture as a result of your interview? Discuss three or four of the most interesting and useful ideas you gained.
Overall, what did this experience teach you about human relations? How will this experience be helpful to you in the future?

Write an essay 3-4 pages covering your observations, findings, interview questions, experience and assumptions as related to PART 1 and 2.

Being a believer of the Christian religion I have had interests in getting to know everything else that is not expounded on by the religion. Therefore I decided to read more on different religions to get more knowledge and to establish whether there exists a link between the different religions or not.
