Pranav Kadewadi: Corporate culture defines the way people work in an Organization. From the case study it is clear that there are lots of areas where the corporate culture has affected planning and implementation of the Project Management Office (PMO). This has caused a lot of hindrance and delays in the planning phase itself.
Nobody wants to give up their authority or power as mentioned by the consultant who audited the Organization. It is the pressure from John Compton, The President of the company, that is forcibly driving the implementation of methodology. Employees are reluctant to take part in it, this shows that the Corporate culture resists change and credits the people with power.
Also, the Leadership is not forthcoming to hear what the employees have to say and analyze the reason behind their reluctance. The President just wants the Project Management Methodology(EPM) to be ingrained in their operations. If only the President sits together with the team and discusses their concerns and assures them job security and relieves them of their insecurity of losing power, the employees will be motivated to do as instructed.
Training is one of the most important aspects that has been not mentioned here. The employees have to be made aware of what is happening, the benefits of implementing Project Management Methodologies. Instead, the employees have been kept unaware of the need for EPM. In addition the consultant has developed fear in their minds regarding the changes upon implementation.
Reporting structure is very important while implementing EPM. The orders or instructions have to flow through proper channels to successfully develop a team and implement EPM. But in this case we can see that the President pressurizes the employees to implement without any direction of delegation of work through proper hierarchy. This chanelizes the work instructions and becomes easy to track change and monitor the stages of planning and implementation.
