In Washington, D.C. at the Capitol, the United States Congress meets to discuss and vote issues on the federal/national level. The United States Congress consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives, also known as “The People’s House”.

US Senators are members of the upper house of the United States Congress. There are two Senators representing each state, who write and vote on laws covering the entire United States. Each state is allotted two senators, so there is a total of one hundred U.S. Senators, each who serve six-year terms.

The House of Representatives in Congress, currently has 435 members. They serve two-year terms. Each state has a representation in the House of Representatives, based on the population of the state. The representatives are given districts to represent. There are currently 435 voting representatives (District of Columbia, Guam, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, etc. have non-voting members of Congress)

Seven states have one only Representative: Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Delaware.

The ten states with the most representatives are:

  • California – 53.

Texas – 36.

  • Florida – 27.
  • New York – 27.
