In my opinion, a scholarly literature is experts writing articles on a topic or subject they are well verse in. It is the genre of writing used in all academic fields. Scholarly work is usually done by professors, doctoral students, or experts in a certain field of study. People who write scholarly literature submit articles to the editors of the journals, who decide whether or not to publish the article. The most prestigious academic journals subject articles to the peer-review process. Pinfield (2015) discuss that the peer-reviewed and professional journal literature not only consists of peer-reviewed journal articles but also review articles, correspondence, opinion pieces and editorials, all of which have also been included in order to take in the widest possible views presented within this formally-published setting. Scholarly sources often have a particular writing style and can be challenging to read compared to other types of sources. This is an area I have trouble with. If the writing I am reading does not capture my attention in the beginning, my mind tends to wonder and I do not process the material. I am merely calling words. Another area of struggle is the citing of material. Scholarly writing includes careful citation of sources and the presence of a bibliography or reference list. Sometimes, I do not reference the materials correctly.
