Lists of logical fallacies

Have you ever experienced something at work or in a social situation that just didn’t make sense? Maybe a supervisor, friend, or family-member tried to persuade you or to justify an action with an argument or message that didn’t ‘add up’. Often, as we covered in this week’s module, these are the result of logical fallacies. Asking critical questions about the decisions, actions, and messages we see and hear every day can improve our communication, sharpen our ability to evaluate an argument or a message, and improve our own decision-making.

For your initial discussion post:

First: share an example from either your workplace or some other area of your life that seemed either illogical or misleading, or that did not seem to follow sound reasoning.

Share your example using the following steps:

  1. Describe the scenario and the argument/message in detail (in a way that shows the faulty reasoning/fallacy).
  2. Referring to the lists of logical fallacies from the Week 4 lectures and lecture resources, identify (and name) a specific logical fallacy (or fallacies) you see.
  3. Explain how the scenario/argument/message is an example of the fallacy you identified.
