Roadblocks to Listening skills
Please discuss your thoughts on the following questions/exercises:
1. Of the Roadblocks to Listening (Preaching, Offering Solutions, Teaching, Judging, Analyzing, Praising, Reassuring, Questioning, and Distracting), which bothers you the most in conversation and why?
2. Which of the roadblocks do you like to do the most? What are you hoping to gain from offering that roadblock? For example some folks like to analyze or give advice because they are hoping others will view them as intelligent and perceptive – others distract, because they feel discomfort with others upset feelings, some folks offer solutions because they want to be seen as helpful and competent.
3. Pay attention this week to your conversations. What is your favorite “go to” minimal encourager (head nods, mmm humm, right, okay, yes)?
4. Pay attention this week to your conversations. Try to make all of your questions open, rather than closed and then used minimal encouragers to get folks to expand on their thoughts. How was that for you?
