Early in the book, Slakey, hanging on the side of the mountain, is faced with a decision: trust his safety rope or untie the safety knot and depend on the untested rappel line (pp. 8-9). As Slakey says, so much about life is untested while a little is proven. Life is a matter of learning from our own mistakes and from the mistakes of others. This is because life is too short for an individual to commit all mistakes and learn from them. Admittedly, it is not easy for us to step out to where we cannot see clearly. This is due to our natural fears of the unknown and all that which lurks in the darkness. This is a manger impediment……………….
