Mongolian Cave Throat Singing for Video #1

Questions:

1)   Use 4 sentences to describe your first impressions of these sounds. Then discuss whether or not they fall into your personal definition of music. Remember to listen many times.

2)   Having listened numerous times, discuss how your decision has changed.

3)   Do a short research quest and tell what you found about Throat Singing.

4)   Who are the Tuvan’s and why is this type of singing important in their culture? Do not answer this question until you have read Chapter 1 in the book. You must have the book to pass the class.

 

Algo Nuevo, Ray Barretto (Video #2 and #3)

Syncretism is a very important topic of this chapter. One example of syncretism presented in the book is salsa. Ray Barretto is one of many famous salsa band leaders and his composition entitled Algo Nuevo is very well known. A continued example of syncretism may have happened when the Musical Arts Quintet recorded their own version of Algo Nuevo. Both versions are listed here. Please listen to them and answer the questions provided.

1) Had you ever heard this piece before listening to it here? If not, have you heard music like this?

2) What differences can you comment on about the two different versions of Algo Nuevo?

3) Is the Musical Arts Quintet version an example of syncretism? Defend your answer.

4) What salsa titles have you found on youtube after listening to these videos. Do you enjoy salsa? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Chapter 2

SNCC We shall overcome! (Freedom singer) Video #4

1)   Who are the SNCC and what is their significance?

2)   Had you heard this song before? Why is it important? What other songs by them were you able to find on youtube?

3)   Discuss the importance of Martin Luther King in your life and for America.

4)   Discuss the relevance of this video to event happening currently in the United States.

Pete Seeger, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee – Down by the Riverside (Video #5)

1)   Do you know any of these performers? After research what comments can you make about each?

2)   What instrument do each of them play?

3)   Does this music inspire you or is it out of touch with society today?

4)   What are the significance of the lyrics in this song?

 

Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen (Video #6)

1)   As you can tell, Pete Seeger performed for many years. Have you heard this song? Have you sung this song?

2)   What is the point of this song?

3)   Someone made the comment “How can you not sing along with this song?” Do you agree? Is it effective?

4)   Is this a patriotic song or a protest song? Do you recognize the performers?

CHAPTER 03 (Video 7-18)

The first two videos are by the composer Juan del Encina. He was born July 12, 1468 in Salamanca Spain and died in late 1529 or early 1530. This means he was a composer writing in the middle of the Renaissance.

Juan de Encina, Cucu, Cucu and Señora de Hermosura (Video #7, and 8)

Answer the following questions:

1)    Pick one of the lines of Cucu, Cucu and use your Essential Elements of Music Card to name the notes on the first three screens.

2)    Find seven sentences on the Kings Singers during your online research and discuss who they are and what they do.

3)    Find a Translation of Señora de Hermosura and discuss its meaning.

4)    Compare the two pieces and discuss which one you like best and why?

Jerry O’Sullivan on his new uilleann pipes (Video #9)

Find out as much as you can about uilleann pipes. What are they? Where do they come from? What is their history? Provide 3 other URL’s that include uilleann pipes and discuss why you picked them.

Chapter 4

Joshua Redman, A Night in Tunisia (Video #10 and #11)

(I included this video in your set because Joshua Redman has such a major Bay Area connection. This song is a very famous song by Dizzy Gillespie and here is a well known version by him:)

Please listen to both and answer the following questions:

1) What do you think Joshua Redman was trying to accomplish since it is very hard to even tell what the song is for a long time into the recording?

2) Have you seen Dizzy Gillespie in any videos before? What makes him famous?

3) What about the high note trumpet player (Arturo Sandoval)? What do you think?

4) Which version do you like most?

Though Rusted Root is not as popular as they once were there are interesting comments in the book by members of the band about learning music. The following video is actually from Woodstock.

Please answer the following questions:

1) After reading the comments in the book by members of the band what do you think are the most important concepts they are trying to convey?

2) Does this “dated” band still have meaning for today? Do they still tour? Do they have a website. Do some research and comment.

 

Charlie Parker, Ornithology (Video #13)

One of the most important concepts in Jazz is the art of improvisation. Charlie Parker stands out as one of the most famous jazz musicians to embrace this art form. Try to find other recordings of Ornithology on you tube and comment on how each is different. Then answer the questions.

1) What instrument does Charlie Parker play? What do you know about it?

2) Charlie Parkers name is associated with a particular era in jazz. What is that era and what do you know about it.

3) Who are some other famous musicians associated with that era.

4) What are your thoughts about this piece and how does the name of this piece tie in with the nickname for Charlie Parker?

Chapter 05(#14-

John Santos, Rhythm as Melody (Video #14)

John Santos is another Bay Area Treasure and has given numerous clinics at Laney College. As a performer, he is keenly aware of rhythm and its relationship to melody.

His use of syncopation and polyrhythms makes this video timely for this chapter.

Watch this video and research other music by John and answer the questions below.

1)   How does John Santos maintain a melody in his head?

2)   After exploring other John Santos videos, list 6 percussion instruments that he plays.

3)   Of the many instruments, which is your favorite and why?

 

Beethoven Fifth Symphony, First Movement (Video #15)

Probably the most recognizable rhythm motif in music is the opening to Beethoven’s

Fifth Symphony. Though you may recognize the beginning and see it in your text book, many people have never listened to the entire movement. It is the first movement of four to make up the symphony. You may recognize the other movements or perhaps you have never listened to it. For this video my request is simple. The score for the symphony is included in this video and now that you have previously watched music go by, please do you best to listen and watch this entire video. As you watch, jot down some notes about how you would describe the instruments, the rhythm, and the melodies.

Ray Spiegel Tabla demonstration (Video #16)

Master of the Tabla, Ray Spiegel, gives an easy to understand explanation of the table and if various rhythms and the words that represent each rhythm. After listening to this music, try to find the Ali Akbar College of Music. It is a very well known College with campuses in India, Switzerland and San Rafael, California.

Keep in mind that part of the class is to attend a live performance and this school might have a concert you could attend.

Answer the following questions:

1)   Explain the teental and relate the video to the text.

2)   How does hand clapping fit into the patterns of Hindustani music performance.

3)   After exploring other table videos what do you know now that you did not know yesterday?

 

Chapter 6 (Video #17-19)

Mozart Piano Sonata (Video # 17)

Here is another longer video with the score. The music may be familiar to you or it may not. Please listen and follow the music at least two and preferably more times. Tell as much as you can about the melody and relate your explanation to the topics discussed in the chapter( Exploring the World of Music by Hast, Cowdery and Scott you may read this to help you answer questions). Include your personal thoughts about melody, reading scores and the overall impact of the composition.

Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan (Video # 18)

The Ali Akbar Khan School of Music in San Rafael is on of the most famous schools outside of India as you now know. The world famous Ravi Shankar of Beatles fame is featured with Khan in this video. Search for other videos of the two of them together or with other players and give your general impression of sitar, table and sarod. And show me the links of other videos you found from youtude.com
