Learning in the Community Exercise
Pick a day in your life to observe and record as many instances as you can in which you encounter or observe learning in a community, apart from schools or any formal learning programs. Look for any sort of informal or incidental learning that takes place in any community (or communities) you identify. This can be at any location and under any circumstances as you go about a normal routine. Do not seek out educational/learning activities to observe. Let the day bring you whatever you are going to encounter. Observe closely, reflect and note any learning that is taking place. Record your observations so you can later refer back to them and use them as you write your paper. You need not interview anyone for this exercise, although you may find that as you observe your curiosity will lead you to check out some of your observations with others. This is acceptable, but not required. The purpose of this exercise is to discover/recognize learning situations that you may or may not have recognized in the past and then draw some conclusions about the nature and frequency of learning events that happen daily in any community. When you have completed your observations write a brief (1000-1500 words) reflective paper about your experience relating your observations to the literature you are reading in class about community education.
