Lean is a term that was introduced in the manufacturing community as a theory on waste reduction. Waste reduction deals with the elimination of tasks that are not needed, or non-value added to the product or service, to improve organizational or process efficiency.
Although this reduction of waste is a good primary benefit, there are secondary benefits that can be realized as well. For example, the quality of the product can be improved or the cycle time for the product can decrease. In addition, although lean is implemented within each organization, it is an interdependent concept. If a prime organization is abiding by lean principles but its suppliers are not, the prime organization can be negatively impacted.
You have learned about lean manufacturing, and this concept of lean can be applied to service organizations as well. Walk through each of the eight wastes for a service industry of your choice and relate an item to each area.
