LEADERSHIP VISION REFLECTION

Consider the following questions as you create a leadership vision to support your school and community.

What are the most significant shared goals of your school and community?

Is there an understanding of the cultural diversity of your school-community? If so, describe that understanding.

Are there financial or physical barriers to your vision, and if so, how would you surmount them?

Can you find at least two examples of other school-community leaders’ goals, which align with your vision?

How would you communicate your leadership vision to your school-community and encourage their collaboration?

Describe how you will apply what you have learned in this course to your dissertation topic or to the selection of a dissertation topic if you have not yet selected a topic.

Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research. Cite and reference your sources in APA style.

Creating a Leadership Vision

NASA. (1969). Apollo 11 – Man on the Moon

In an article for Forbes, Ryan (2009) wrote, “leadership success always starts with vision” (para 2). As educators and administrators prepare to lead their students, schools, and communities toward a greater community, they must first articulate a leadership vision. In 2008, Friedman described a leadership vision as:

An essential means of focusing attention on what matters most, what you want to accomplish in your life, and what kind of leader you wish to be. A useful vision has to be rooted in your past, address the future, and deal with today’s realities. It represents who you are and what you stand for. It inspires you, and the people whose commitment you need, to act to make constructive change towards a future you all want to see. (para 2)

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy shared his leadership vision to send a man to the moon; and his vision became a reality in 1969. Steve Jobs had a vision to create a computer everyone could easily use and operate. Today his Macintosh computers, iPods, iPads, and iPhones are ubiquitous throughout society. Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream that someday all men would be treated equally. His “I have a dream” speech and his non-violent activism soon became part of our nation’s moral compass.

This week, reflect on these visionary leaders and develop a leadership vision for yourself, and those you serve, in order to provide the inspiration and motivation necessary to create a greater community.
