Discussion: Skills and Style in Leadership

The Skills Approach to Leadership is another leader-centered approach to leadership, but rather than emphasizing the traits of the leader, it focuses on the abilities or competencies of the leader. The Skills Approach appeals to many people because it postulates that skills can be learned, and therefore, leadership is available to anyone who can learn.

The Behavioral Approach differs from both the Trait and Skills approaches because the Behavioral Approach focuses on leader behavior, not on what leaders are or on their capabilities.

The Behavioral Approach postulates two types of leader behavior: task behaviors and relationship behaviors. This approach focuses on how these two behaviors relate to and influence one another.
