What might you do to facilitate a more empathetic collaborative space?
The development and use of soft skills would be a priority (for me) If team members were not screened for them (or displayed them) during recruiting and selection. Though hard to measure, teams with soft skills facilitate the sharing of ideas, the pooling of knowledge to solve problems and fosters a collective effort towards keeping each member updated about progress (Jones, 2020). These abilities auger well for a collaborative space that is defined by a productive workforce and trusting relationships.
How would effective collaboration still have allowed Apple to succeed?
According to the case study exercise on transformational leadership, empathy promotes effective collaboration, innovation, and competitive advantage. Since effective leaders collaborate (ie employing soft skills such as empathy and effective communication) to improve their thinking and handle complexities effectively, Apple would have succeeded regardless of the brutish behavior of Steve Jobs. As his partner Steve Wozniak stated, Jobs did not need to “terrorize” others as he did to succeed.
What would you say to a colleague who is being disrespectful, abusive, or aggressive during a collaborative exchange?
I would enquire to see if they realize that what they are doing is disrespectful, abusive, or aggressive and ask that they stop and reflect on how best to proceed. Perhaps through some coaching or mediating the collaborative exchange could be more fulfilling.

Hi class! I don’t agree with or condone Steve Jobs’ leadership approach. The way Jobs’ rescued Apple from dire straits and turned it around in such a short time is quite an admirable and amazing feat. At the same, I can’t respect someone that treats his employees poorly and with no compassion.
I feel like facilitating an empathetic collaborative space is a big part of my daily job in the elementary school where I work. It amazes me how unkind kids can be to each other at such young ages. Besides teaching curriculum, we aim to teach important life skills to make students better people as they grow up. We honor “Golden Rule” recipients in each class on a monthly basis to students that demonstrate treating others as they wish to be treated. This would be a great thing for large organizations (like Apple) to incorporate into their work culture to help enforce empathy and collaboration.I think Apple’s success would have reached even greater limits with effective collaboration. I see Jobs as more of an autocratic leader, not relinquishing control to others. Autocratic leaders do not consult the group, which may result in disgruntled group members who feel like they cannot contribute their ideas to the process (LaMarco, 2019). If Jobs had let creativity flow amongst his employees, Apple’s success could have been limitless.
A colleague who is being disrespectful, abusive, or aggressive during a collaborative exchange should be reported to a manager and human resources. There should be a documented private conversation with that colleague along with coaching feedback. If the behaviors continue, the colleague should receive disciplinary action or even termination (depending on circumstances).
