This weeks chapter on Leadership is summarized in the book as “the process in which people inspire, influence, and empower others to achieve a common goal.” (Bucher, 218) And the article I have chosen this week is about inclusion which ties into leadership very well. As a leader it should be a strength to be able to make everyone around you to feel included and help them fit in even if they don’t.
This article, and the video that goes along with it, demonstrate how teamwork and leadership can come together to promote and support diverse businesses. Addis Brown is the owner of a hair salon that has a team which is trained in the styling of any kind of hair (Snow). “No matter if you’re black, white, Asian, Hispanic., we’re proud we can service any type of hair, and that’s a huge part of our salon atmosphere,” says Brown (Snow). She has created a team of diverse employees who have been trained to be able to cut and style any type of hair. This kind of team is a result of strong leadership skills on Brown’s part. She is making use of the four building blocks of diversity conscious leadership: skills, commitment, awareness, and understanding (Bucher 225). Her diversity skills help her to interact with the diverse individuals, in a way that promotes her own understanding, and that of her community. She is encouraging awareness of the diversity and the differences that exist between people, between her employees, and the community, as well. Brown is also committed to her community and her cause of being able to provide service to anyone (Bucher 225). She is using these building blocks to create a group of employees who can use teamwork and teamwork skills, in order to serve the diverse people who ask for her hair service. She, as a leader and an employer, is promoting flexibility within her team of employees, leading to a high performance team (Bucher 202). By encouraging empathy, “team culture,” and “team chemistry,” Brown is creating a team that will be very successful in its efforts to bring awareness and provide inclusive service to the community (Bucher 198-200).
