Leaders in nursing

Leaders in nursing, especially nurse educators, inspire and influence other nurses to achieve their maximum potential. Nurse educators apply leadership in nursing by being an example themselves to students and other faculty nursing educators, and nurses in the healthcare settings they work. Using critical thinking skills to influence, motivate, and hands-on skills as a role model is an important tool in managing a team or practice. To implement a role model theory as a nurse educator, I will involve myself in the daily tasks as a nurse primarily, motivating my students and other nurses to be involved in the activities. “Nurse leaders take a broad view of how daily tasks impact the overall goals of the health care organization. They communicate expectations to their team and motivate them to achieve predetermined goals. Nurses can lead from various organizational areas if they project the necessary leadership qualities to influence others” (ANA, 2023). Implementing a change using the role model theory as a potential nurse educator demands taking ownership of the working environment and practicing what I preach to my nursing assistants, and everyone involved in the provision of care to my patients. As an example, I always set up empty rooms waiting for new patients, gather the needed supplies based on the incoming patient’s needs, get my first set of vital signs and physical assessments. I make sure I am doing everything myself or take the lead in admitting the patient. Few nursing students I work with as nursing assistants on my floor are always eager to receive admissions with me. One of the reasons is that I will be teaching every step in the admission process, the patients’ disease or diagnosis and what are expected of us and setting up discharge plan with the patient and their loved one’s present. Being a role model as I have learnt to practice has made my nursing practice experience very enjoyable and easy for me. As a potential nurse educator, thinking of working in my hospitals’ nursing research and education department and teaching in nursing school setting, I have come to understand that nursing leadership using the role model theory takes on additional layers of complexity approach in learning, teaching, and influencing others to follow along.
