I-Thou Communication
Martin Buber was an early 20th century Jewish theologian, famous for the distinction between \\\”I-It\\\” relationships and \\\”I-Thou\\\” relationships. \\\”I-It\\\” and \\\”I-Thou\\\” are two distinct ways of relating.
- In the I-It encounter, we relate to another as an object, completely outside of ourselves.
- In other words, I meet you and interact with you in your social role.
- In the I-Thou encounter, we relate to each other as authentic beings, without judgement, qualification or objectification.
- In other words, I meet you as you are, and you meet me as I am; we see each other as unique individuals – more than our social roles.
