- Access “Parallels In Time: A History of Developmental Disabilities” using the following URLs: http://www.mnddc.org/parallels/index.html OR http://www.mnddc.org/parallels2/index.htm
- Review all sections of one of these websites.
- A minimum 500 word (double spaced) summary is required for at least 3 or more of the sections/topics reviewed. (one summary that includes all 3 sections/topics)
- A one page (double-spaced) personal reaction should follow the summary.

The concept of living independently is opposite to that of institutions and moving away from parental dependency. Essentially, independent living implies being in a position to make decisions that affects a person’s life. At the same time, the concept implies individuals being in a position to pursue activities that they have selected without opposition or interference from those around them. According to this article, independent living does not imply living alone. A person can still be independent while still living with his or her parents.
