Just reflect back on the discussion board you did for last Friday:

Given that the organization I work for does not have quality improvement programs, I have relied on the experience of my friends who work in the healthcare industry. According to the account which they gave, their experience with quality improvement programs has been to a major extent positive. That is because such programs have been effective in optimizing the care which is offered to the patients. In that way, there has been an improvement in terms of patient outcomes. Additionally, the programs have assisted in the provision of patient-centered care. That is because the staff in the healthcare organization can be more responsive to the patients’ needs. As well, they are actively participating in offering value-based care. My friends have also asserted that quality improvement programs have been associated with cost-effectiveness in the provision of healthcare services. That is because there is a reduction in the costs associated with process failure and the occurrence of errors.

There are several factors that have to the development of a more strategic perspective of total quality management. First, it is the need to reduce the costs which are associated with the running of different operations in an organization. Secondly, the strategic view has been motivated by the desire to have a high level is customer satisfaction with the products or services which are offered by an organization. In such an instance, there will be fewer complaints about the manner that the organization operates. The third factor is because organizations want to improve the level of productivity (Gartenstein, 2019). Notably, with the implementation of total quality management programs, employees will spend less time dealing with different errors. That implies they will be concerned with improving productivity in the institution. Fourthly, it is the need to reduce the number of errors and defects in different processes. It will assist in reducing the cost, which is associated with rectifying errors. As well, it will decrease the need to hire quality assurance personnel. The last factor influencing a more strategic view of total quality management is the need to make better products at reduced costs.

The implementation of total quality management in a healthcare organization will have different outcomes. For starters, there will be a reduction in the number of medical errors that happen in practice settings. That is because there is a huge focus on ensuring that different processes are running smoothly. Secondly, there will be a decrease in the waiting times before the patient can have access to the doctor. Consequently, there will be a high level of satisfaction in the services offered in the healthcare organization. Thirdly, there will be an improvement in the process of sharing knowledge. In that way, it will result in the deepening and broadening of knowledge. Lastly, total quality management will help in identifying skill deficiencies in healthcare organizations. As a result, it will help in creating ways of solving them.

Different reasons can be attributed to the failure of some quality initiatives. First, it is the lack of good communication where some stakeholders in an organization are not aware of what the initiative entails (Wiegmann, 2016). Secondly, it is neglecting key aspects that are associated with improving patient satisfaction, for example, reducing the waiting lines. Thirdly, it is having quality initiatives that are solely focused on dealing with problems rather than dedicating some effort to delivering quality products and services.
