Human trafficking affects millions of people worldwide, including in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security describes human trafficking as an act that consists of “the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act” (n.d., para.1). This might include the use of violence, manipulation, or promises of financial prosperity or romantic relationships as a means of persuasion. Human trafficking can occur in any community, affecting men, women, and children of all ages, races, religions, and nationalities. Victims of human trafficking may experience fear, guilt, or shame. It is essential for counselors to understand how the cycle of abuse occurs and develop the ability to identify possible victimization among clients.
