The purpose of this paper is to develop your understanding of the complexities faced by many Americans who are members of both ethnic and disability groups. As health service providers, we must take the complexities of dual diversity into account when designing helping strategies. For this paper you will begin by creating a case example. You may describe someone you know, use a person from fiction, or create an entirely original character. This person should be a member of an ethnic minority and have a disability. First, you will describe this person according to the bulleted guidelines below. You will also describe the health care agency in which you work (this can be fictional, too), and the problem for which this client has come to you for help. You will identify and discuss the issues you must consider in order to fully understand this client, related to the client’s ethnicity, the client’s disability, and the unique way in which the two combine. Once you have presented the case and discussed the client’s unique issues, you will design a helping plan to address the client’s problems. It should include what you yourself would do to help, as well as describe additional systems (family, school, workplace, social and health service agencies) you would include in an effort to provide holistic assistance to this client. Above all, it must demonstrate culturally sensitive and appropriate interventions.
