Analytical Research Essay Final Draft
In this final draft, you will provide an argument thesis about your chosen controversial topic/issue. You will have an introduction paragraph, at least 4 body paragraphs (though you can have more) with one body paragraph reserved for a counter argument/rebuttal. You will also have a conclusion paragraph and works cited page. A large part of your argument will be analyzing four sources, three of which need to be peer-reviewed articles. The fourth source can be another peer-reviewed article, but it can also be a newspaper/magazine article, professional website/blog, or government document. Likely, you will devote more time to some sources than others, but all four need to be acknowledged in a reasonable way inside the essay.
The introduction paragraph must begin with a background section which briefly details why the topic is controversial; after the background section, you will present your thesis about the topic. The thesis should be one sentence and indicate your particular stand on the issue; within that one sentence, you can forecast your main lines of argument which will appear in the body of the essay. The thesis should be the last sentence of the introduction paragraph.
In the body of the essay, use as many paragraphs as needed to make your case about the issue; however, if you choose to devote a first body paragraph to expand on the controversial nature of your topic, then devote at least three additional body paragraphs (not including the counter-argument/rebuttal paragraph) to developing your supporting claims. Additionally, the final body paragraph before the conclusion paragraph should present a possible counter-argument(s) and your rebuttal(s). The counter-argument/rebuttal demonstrates to your readers that you’ve anticipated an opponent’s objection(s) and are prepared with a reply.
The body paragraphs must each begin with a clear topic sentence that presents what you are focusing on in each paragraph. After the topic sentence, you will begin developing your supporting claims (i.e. reasons behind your thesis) by appealing to your reader’s sense of logic and possibly to their emotions and values. You also want to establish credibility with readers by acknowledging other points of view, even if you don’t agree with them (review on logos, pathos, and ethos as well). Of course, you will also engage with the arguments and/or evidence found in your researched sources as a means of strengthening your own argument. As mentioned above, use a final body paragraph before the conclusion to acknowledge any possible counter-argument(s) along with your rebuttal. Finally, the conclusion paragraph should bring your argument to a satisfying end by reminding your reader of the main thrust of your argument and supporting claims.
When you cite from your four researched sources, paraphrase and summarize mainly while quoting only quoting small sentences, individual words, or phrases. Employ MLA parenthetical references after each citation. Also provide an MLA Works Cited page which includes all fours sources. The essay must be double spaced in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with one-inch margins all around. Write in the third-person point of view (no first or second-persons, I/we or you) and remain in the present tense. This rough draft should at least be four pages, not including the Works Cited page, but no more than 6 pages typed (anywhere between 1200 to 1500 words, give or take).
