Heap sort is set apart from other comparison based sort algorithms mainly with regards to its run time and space considerations. It has a time complexity of O(n log n) for the worst, average and best cases which is better than algorithms like quicksort which has a worst case scenario of O(n²) (Cormen et al., 2009). The space complexity of heapsort in terms of in place sorting is O(1) and is thus more space efficient than merge sort which requires an additional O(n) of space (Knuth, 1998).
On the other hand, all algorithms have their weaknesses. One of the biggest drawbacks of heapsort, despite its guaranteed O(n log n) speed, is its actual slowness in implemented heapsorts in comparison with quicksorts. This is mainly because of poor cache locality due to constant hopping from one data point in the heap to another, which is inefficient for accessing stored computer memory (Sedgewick & Wayne, 2011).

However, heap sort has some drawbacks. It is not a stable sort, meaning that equal elements might not keep their original order. Additionally, its memory access pattern leads to poor cache performance, making it slower in practice compared to quicksort, which often runs faster due to better cache utilization. Despite these limitations, heap sort is simple to implement and is useful in scenarios where memory usage is a critical concern. For general purposes, though, quicksort or merge sort might be preferred due to their practical performance benefits.

The choice of the proper hashing function is very significant regarding performance and efficiency. A well-designed hash function contributes much to the speed and reliability of operations such as insertion, deletion, and search (Codefinity, n.d.). With a good hash function, such operations normally have an average-case complexity of O(1), while poor ones may be prone to many collisions, hence degrading performance in the worst case to O(n) (GeeksforGeeks, 2024; HackerEarth, n.d.).
Another important performance factor of the hash table is the load factor, ?. The bigger the load factor, the greater the probability of collision and clustering, which can degrade efficiency (HackerEarth, n.d.). Choosing an appropriate hash function with properties like determinism, efficiency, fixed output size, and uniformity will lead to better performance, along with efficient management of the load factor (Codefinity, n.d.; GeeksforGeeks, 2024).
4th discussion:
Using an appropriate hashing function is one important factor because it affects the evenness of data distribution on the hash table, which in turn affects the performance. A good hash value will produce a small number of collisions, where different keys are associated with the same hash value. Collisions will make the hash tables invoke concepts like chaining or open addressing to resolve them, which will be a disadvantage to the performance (Cormen et al., 2009).
For instance, in a hash table with poor distribution, insertion, deletion, and search operations, which are all O(1) will turn O(n) due to more and more collisions especially in cases where the table is overly used or the load factor goes beyond optimal levels. An effective hash function minimizes the number of collisions and evenly distributes the load allowing the same efficiency for any size of the dataset (Knuth, 1998).
