There are several issues that healthcare is currently facing, and the nursing shortage is the one that I\’d like to focus on. It is currently impacting several organizations including the one in which I am currently employed. Copious amount of our nursing staff has left since I have started working with my organization, and even more have left recently causing us to rely on agency nurses.

Nurses are a vital part of the healthcare system, studies have shown that when hospitals or other healthcare facilities have adequate nursing staff, it improves safety, mortality rates, and overall patient outcomes (Behring, 2021). In the organization in which I work, there have been efforts made to increase the nurse retention rate within our facility such as offering bonuses, offering extra money per hour if you are to be floated to another unit that is not your home unit, as well as other means. The feedback to these implementations were positive, but the only problem is they implemented these incentives a little too late, we have already lost a bulk of our staff prior to the implementation

I believe in order to slow down the nurse shortage, especially when it comes to staffed nurses is to give them a reason to stay, nurses love to feel appreciated because there is indeed a lot that we do, our profession is based on putting others first. Bonuses, making sure units are adequately staffed, healthy nurse to patient ratios, and of course good pay can help nurse retention and in turn slow down the nurse shortage.
