A professional journal that I might want to present my project of preventing surgical site infections would be AORN. AORN is an association of perioperative registered nurses that was founded in 1949 to establish a national community for operating room nurses who sought to share best practices for patients undergoing surgery. Today, they unite and empower perioperative nurses, health care organizations, and industry partners to support safe surgery for every patient, every time (AORN, 2020).
The Nebraska Hospital Association conference would offer an excellent opportunity to present my project. The Nebraska Hospital Association serves as the influential voice of its members in the health care legislatives and public arenas, promoting delivery of quality health care and influencing public opinion of hospitals and health networks (NHA, 2020).

A professional journal I would want to present my project about condom distribution programs is Family & Community Health. This practical quarterly presents creative, multidisciplinary perspectives and approaches for effective public and community health programs. Each issue focuses on a single timely topic and addresses issues of concern to a wide variety of population groups with diverse ethnic backgrounds, including children and the elderly, men and women, and rural and urban communities. Considering my project aims for the betterment of the community and the targeted audience is the same audience this journal writes about, it sounds like this would be the best choice. Also, they posted that they are seeking authoritative papers on pertinent information about health disparities and health inequity among vulnerable populations. Submitted papers should aim to advance the science of health disparities and health equity with a focus on families and communities.
The Minnesota Department of Health holds a Community Health Conference yearly. The conference regularly serves 350-400 attendees who learn about health equity, the future of public health practice, and ways in which public health connects and intersects with other disciplines. It also provides CEUs for dieticians, health educators, nurses, sanitarians, and for general attendees.

One health care conference where I might be able to present my project is the Scripps Annual Clinical Advances in Heart Failure and Arrhythmias conference. This conference is designed to educate clinicians on heart failure care and arrhythmias (Scripps, 2020). A journal that would be a good choice would be the American College of Cardiology Journal for Heart Failure (JACC:Heart Failure). “ACC Journals continuously strive to provide the best resources for cardiovascular investigators, clinicians, and specialists at every professional stage” (JACC: Heart Failure, (n.d.)). This conference and journal would be a good choice to disseminate the new knowledge because it educates health care providers on the importance of incorporating caregivers in heart failure care to promote patient self-care and better patient outcomes.

The inclusion of EBP in nursing provides nurses with the scientific research to make well-founded decisions. Through EBP, nurses can stay updated about new medical protocols for patient care. By searching for documented interventions that fit the profiles of their patients, nurses can increase their patients’ chances for recovery. EBP enables nurses to evaluate research so they understand the risks or effectiveness of a diagnostic test or treatments. The application of EBP enables nurses to include patients in their care plan. This allows patients to have a proactive role in their own healthcare since they can voice concerns, share their values and preferences and make suggestions on how they want to proceed (Eastern Illinois University, 2018).
I will continue reading professional journals to stay up to date with current practices so I can provide consistent, backed by science and evidence, care. I will also ensure to read up on nursing interventions to evaluate the best intervention for my patients. At work, the challenges that could occur involve the staff not finding time to go online and do research. What I can do is print the articles I’ve read that I find will be useful to the workplace, and with the approval of my manager, post them in the break room where everyone can see. I can also talk with my manager and inquire about setting up education times for the staff, like a hour a week, so we can have time to gain more knowledge.

EBP is essential for BSN nurses because it combines clinical expertise, scientific evidence and professional and patient perspectives to form health care strategies that optimize patient outcomes and health care delivery (The Importance of Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing,2020). A nurse that is BSN prepared has an increased knowledge about EBP, leadership, community health and health promotion. One way I can continue to integrate EBP in my practice is evaluating certain strategies and policies that are in place in my facility and assist with changes when they are needed. Asking clinical questions is an important part of EBP and a good place to start. Asking the question of why we do certain things can be important to coming up with better alternatives and begin to research the why. Another way to integrate it is to take part in EBP committees when they are available. Some barriers to this can be time. There is often not enough time in the ER setting to step aside and investigate evidence for why we do certain things, but I can use time such as staff meetings or any down time I may have during the summer when census is usually lower to engage in those activities.

Practices that are based on research findings are more likely to result in favorable patient outcomes. Evidence-based practice (EBP) leads to more individualized and effective patient care, maximizing the effects of clinical judgment (Youngblut & Brooten, 2001), a hallmark of the BSN-prepared nurse. Being cognizant of the research behind the care I give and the procedures I perform will help me to continue to integrate evidence into my practice. Because those nurses I work with that were educated 20-years ago are not familiar with EBP, I would take the opportunity to discuss with them what I have learned in this course about EBP and how it can affect patient outcomes. There will undoubtedly be resistance to EBP, likely because of time constraints. I would encourage my manager or leader to incorporate EBP education into the yearly mandatory educational modules where time is usually allotted apart from clinical duties for education.
