The cultural dimensions of leadership
Application: Cultural Dimensions
Week 6 emphasized self-awareness in leadership. Global leadership shifts the emphasis from self-awareness to other-awareness or cultural-awareness. Successful global leaders must be flexible in the midst of diversity while channeling that diversity into a momentum of productivity.Suppose you have been given an assignment to go to a foreign country and lead a group of employees. What might you do to prepare for your assignment? How might you embrace the culture of the foreign country? How might that culture impact your ability to lead?
To prepare for this assignment:
Review Chapter 16 in the course text, Leadership: Theory and Practice. Pay particular attention to the cultural dimensions of leadership.
Review the article “Identifying Global Leadership Competencies: An Exploratory Study.” Focus on cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral competencies related to effective global leadership.
Complete the Dimensions of Culture Questionnaire on pages 459-463 in the course text, Leadership: Theory and Practice. Keep in mind that your responses should be based on the country in which you currently reside.
Select a country that is of interest to you. (This should not be one that you chose for the Week 10 Discussion.) Compare your results from the questionnaire on page 462 with the mean scores of the cultural cluster to which the country you selected belongs. Based on your comparison, identify cultural dimensions in which there is a significant difference between your scores and the mean scores.
Keeping the cultural dimensions in mind, think about challenges you might face as an expatriate leader in the country you selected.
Consider cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral leadership competencies you might develop to address such challenges.
The assignment: (2-3 pages)
Identify the country in which you reside and the country you selected for your comparison.
Analyze the differences related to cultural dimensions in the country in which you reside and the country you selected.
Based on your analysis, describe at least two challenges you might face as an expatriate leader in the country you selected.
Describe at least two leadership competencies you might develop to address such challenges and explain how you might develop each.
