Gender identity is defined as self-identifying as a gender that is physiological and not biological. In shorter terms it can be defined as “who a person identifies with and what they consider themselves to be”. A person who is experiencing a gender identity crisis can self evaluate themselves by getting in touch with what sex they can identify themselves with. It is the first step in “knowing who you are and self-identification”. Ferguson(2017), illustrates the avoidance of addressing this population in his statement by illustrating that this population is obscured and is avoided in the mention of publications that include research, theory and interventions that are clinical based. A new understanding gained of gender identity is that it is not a culture that is widely accepted because it is avoided due to the nature of its origination and the value of its content to its audience.
It is my opinion through experience and observation that gender identity can affect those who are struggling with accepting who they are through young and middle adulthood by creating a biological and or psychological conflict. Biological or psychological conflicts can occur if gender identity is unresolved and at some point can create a gender identity crisis. Gender identity crisis can cause issues with mental, social and promote a negative overall physiological wellbeing. Unhealthy wellbeing that occurs in young and middle adulthood can cause stagnation in developmental stages and prevent this stage in life from reaching its milestones. The result of stagnation in young and middle adulthood is the formation of an individual who does not perform optimally enough to resolve his or her identity crisis.
A strategy that I might use to apply my understanding of gender identity development to social work is to become culturally competent. Pleak (2009), states that gender identity development is not always easily identified because during the development in young adulthood or adolescence, the individual is often isolated through self-isolation. Self-isolation is probable due to a feeling of abnormality. i would apply my understanding of gender identity development to social work by human or psychological competence. I would compare the stages of development to where the client is physiologically to determine what work would need to be done through social work to assist the client with gender identification.
