Final Assessment: Essay
Throughout this Critical Thinking course you have completed a series of critical thinking exercises. Self-reflection as well as being able to think critically in discussion and in general interaction with others are important components addressed throughout the class. In this essay, different learner thought processes will be used by each student to formulate arguments and explanations. As each learner is unique, researching and writing this essay will allow the incorporation of a variety of thought processes into the final essay, thereby maximizing and crystallizing the critical thinking knowledge and skill you have been studying.
The final assessment in this course is a written APA essay that meets one of the UIU requirements for General Education. In your essay, you will formulate a thesis and develop it convincingly in coherent English prose in a written argument of at least 800 words, but not more than 1000 words. The assignment will prompt you to demonstrate your understanding of the critical thinking skills studied throughout the present course. Your topics may range from political, economic, and social issues (see page 280 in the textbook for ten topics you may choose from). Choose one topic to develop into your APA (6th Edition) essay. You are to construct an argument championing one side of an issue. You must specifically state your position as your thesis statement. This is essential to developing your essay. Follow the conventions of the discourse community described in Chapter 11 of your text. Remember, you must state your position and support your argument with documentation (citations and references) in APA style. Opinion alone will not do. Use what you have learned about critical thinking and how to support your argument using valid and comprehensive resources.
You may want to consider UIU and course criteria for the essay:
• “The length of the essay is at least 800 words (*but not more than 1000 words). If shorter than 800 words, the argument is of such clarity and force that it convinces wholeheartedly and without reservation. (20 percent)
• A defensible thesis is either stated or clearly implied in one of the first two full paragraphs. (10 percent)
• The essay is divided into discrete paragraphs, each connected to the thesis and each developing an identifiable topic. *Topic headings must be used. (30 percent)
• General assertions are supported with evidence that is statistical, anecdotal, or expert opinion. A minimum of two of these different types of evidence (*citations) is used somewhere in the essay. (20 percent)
• There may be occasional errors in usage, punctuation, or spelling, but these, taken as a whole, are neither sufficiently egregious to seriously distract the reader. (20 percent)”
*Added by the instructor as a course requirement.
Please remember that APA style is required for format, citations, and references. Use the 6th Edition. You must state your thesis (position) for the essay and develop that thesis throughout the paper. Appropriate topic headings are required. You will provide your own relevant topic headings. You will need a cover page, an Introduction, the Body of the essay, and a Summary or Conclusion, as well as a Reference list. Your 250-point essay is to be written in APA style using third person voice. For a passing score, 70 percent is required. This essay will not be posted for discussion. Your essay will be due on day 6 (Saturday) of Week 8. You are required to post this assignment via LiveText. Be sure to check the link LiveText under Course Home. Also you need to attach a copy in the online Dropbox as a backup. No assignments will be accepted after the last day of class.
