An explanation of potential challenges for engagement in my field experience.
A potential challenge in my field experience that has often come up is covid restrictions and building rapport with the clients, especially the younger clients. Since the pandemic there have been restrictions on home visits in my area and the staff has had to resort to telehealth which creates limited face-to-face services. Although telehealth is convenient and safer during these challenging times, for the younger kids it takes away from building a rapport and overcoming any barriers that may be present. Just recently at our agency, the CEO has opened it up for the therapist to do home visits and or have the client come into the office for their sessions. Establishing a good social worker-client relationship from the stated is the best way to engage clients and empower them in meeting their goals.

I plan on addressing the challenges for engagement by scheduling the appointments at a local place in the community or a park where we are still able to engage and continue on with sessions while practicing safe distance. I will also like to gather resources for the client and family that are geared towards the client’s needs and coordinate these services. Another way is to increase my self-awareness and connect with the other interns or therapists on other ways to build rapport with clients.

Engagement is the first phase of planned change process during which the client and social worker establish effective working relationship (Garthwait, C. L. (2017). As an intern, we will face numerous challenges that will make us feel uncomfortable in some situations. The challenges I have faced in my field agency are lack of communication and trust. Clients lack communication because offend they do not want to expose all of what is going on in their lives. Which makes it harder for the school social worker, and I to build a rapport report with the family and provide the proper treatment services they may need; until something happens, then everything comes out. Another challenge is trust. Some clients have a hard time trusting school social workers or therapists because as I mentioned last term, I live in a small town, and your confidentiality is easy to spread thought out the city.

I believe in helping with engagement with a client and their families with trust issues and lack of communication, is to continue to motivate change in those clients by being an active listener, nonjudgmental, avoiding overstating or understating, using the language of the client but choose your words carefully, show empathy and always ask for feedback from your field instructor. Effective communication is essential for supporting clients to express their wishes and views on their support and care. Do everything possible to arrange and obtain the experience need to advance your learning (Garthwait, C. L. (2017) in your field agency.

I currently intern at a place called Mercy House which is a homeless shelter that services adult males, adult females, and couples. My current role as an intern at Mercy House is to help link clients to the services including health services, social services, and housing services to meet their basic needs for improving their overall well-being. One potential engagement challenge for engagement at my field education agency is that I am faced with helping clients who are experiencing mental health conditions. For example, there was one particular client who came into our meeting to talk about his housing goals while in the meeting the client was incoherent when he talked. The client was unable to discuss his housing goals due to mental health conditions having an impact on their functioning. It makes it challenging to assist this particular client due to them not being able to communicate effectively.
One personal action plan that I take when meeting with any of the clients is the empathetic role. The reason why I take this approach is due to having some similar experiences as some of the clients in the shelter. While working with the clients, I empathize with them as well as convey understanding, provide support, create a non-judgemental stance, and incorporate unconditional positive regard in meetings. Mental health practitioners who utilize an empathetic role are more effective in assisting clients and can balance their responsibilities better (Gerdes & Segal, 2011).
