Films that somewhat related to the social problem film could be categorized into the gangster genre
I like fictional films, especially the Marvel series. Films in this sort of genre are always expected to have elements such as hero, salvage, and good or evil deeds. Marvel series are expected to present superhero and their super power. When the new Marvel movie Venom came out in 2018, fans and movie lovers are expected to see a unique anti-heroic character. However, the plot of the film was not so predictable as we thought to be. We were thrilled to find that instead of being evil, the Venom actually turned into a good being. Despite the familiarity for us who were Marvel fans, the ending of the movie was surprised to us. After reading the article “Film as social practice” by Graeme Turner and listening to the lecture, I realized that the reason for Venom to jump out of its conventional codes is to attract audience and prevent them from getting tired of the same plots over and over again. Turner mentions that “It is the variation from the expectation, the innovation in how a familiar scenario is played, that offers the audience the pleasure of the recognition of the familiar, as well as the thrill of the new.” (3) Genre films find new ways to jump out of the boundaries.
