Ethics play a crucial role in any professional setting as they provide a framework for making decisions that respect the rights and dignity of all individuals involved. In my current environment at Willow Springs for my mental health clinical rotation, ethics are essential for several reasons. Firstly, ethics ensure that the rights of the kids at Willow Springs are upheld, including their right to confidentiality, informed consent, and respectful treatment. Given the disagreements I\’ve had with some mentors about their interactions with the kids, it is clear that a strong ethical foundation is needed to guide behavior and ensure that the kids are treated with dignity and respect (American Nurses Association, 2015).
Secondly, ethical guidelines help create a safe and supportive environment for both the kids and the staff. This involves implementing and enforcing policies on language, behavior, and room cleanliness, which I believe should be stricter to maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere. Upholding ethical standards fosters trust between staff and the kids, ensuring that the staff act with integrity, honesty, and accountability, which is vital in a setting where vulnerable individuals are being cared for and supported (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019).
Thirdly, ethics provide a basis for making difficult decisions, especially in complex situations where the right course of action is not immediately clear. For example, in addressing the unrealistic policy on language, an ethical approach would balance the need for discipline with an understanding of real-world behavior and the kids\’ backgrounds (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019). In a setting like Willow Springs, staff members serve as role models for the kids. By adhering to ethical principles, staff demonstrate appropriate behavior and decision-making processes, which can positively influence the kids\’ development and future choices (American Nurses Association, 2015).
In a future workplace, I would continue to prioritize ethics, especially in settings that involve vulnerable populations or require significant interpersonal interactions. Upholding ethical standards would ensure that all individuals are treated fairly and with respect, fostering a positive, trustworthy, and effective working environment (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019).

Ethics play a major part in the workplace. Ethics can be defined as, “ the discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad and morally right and wrong” (Singer, 2024). When it comes to your workplace ethics can be involved in the decision making that will shape your work reputation. Having good ethics can come into play, especially when caring for others in the healthcare field. Considering my current place of work, which is a rehabilitation facility, ethics plays a major role. I have to consider throughout my whole shift how to help the patients to the best of my ability to ensure they all get the same treatment and care. “The perception of ethical behavior can increase employee performance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, trust and organizational citizenship behaviors” (Mahan & Nelms, 2024). Even outside of the healthcare field, ethics can come to play in any job or role.
