Environmental psychology systems framework
To explore my clients\’ experiences within their social, cultural, familial, and political environments, I will utilize a person-centered and trauma-informed approach (SAMHSA, 2014). This means creating a safe and non-judgmental space where clients feel empowered to share their unique history. I will employ an Environmental psychology systems framework(Bronfenbrenner, 1979) to assess how various social systems—family, community, education, and policy—impact their mental health and well-being. Open-ended questions and motivational interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2013) will help guide these discussions in a client-centered manner.
How will you approach cultural differences between you and your clients?
Cultural humility, as described by Tervalon and Murray-García (1998), will be central to my practice. This involves continuous self-reflection, acknowledging my biases, and being open to learning from my clients\’ history and experiences. I will integrate culturally responsive assessment tools (Sue & Sue, 2016) and consider factors like language, acculturation, and historical trauma when formulating treatment plans. Consulting with supervisors and engaging in ongoing cultural competency training will ensure that I am providing ethically sound and inclusive care.
What are some benefits and drawbacks to broaching these subjects during the intake process?
Discussing these topics during intake can enhance trust and rapport, allowing clients to feel seen and understood, which contributes to effective treatment planning (Norcross & Wampold, 2019). However, clients may also feel overwhelmed or hesitant to disclose personal details early in the relationship. Some may fear judgment or have had negative experiences with mental health systems in the past. A flexible, client-led approach—allowing these discussions to unfold over time—can help mitigate discomfort while still gathering essential information.
