diverse cultures and subcultures
Throughout this course, you will examine various cultures and the way those cultures influence your communication with individuals from a culture other than your own. You will integrate this new knowledge into a Final Project which requires that you write a 2-3 page proposal for a 30-minute television script that incorporates characters from diverse cultures and subcultures. Your characters might include a Caucasian country girl from Iowa who is a star athlete and graphic designer; an Asian city boy from Los Angeles who is a rapper and also works the computer help desk; or an African-American marketing specialist from Chicago. Take your characters and make them interact in a professional workplace setting such as an office that publishes a magazine. Once the script is written, you will write a 500-word explanation for why each character acts the way he or she does. When writing the script, be sure to look at the legitimate behavior of the culture and not the stereotypes associated with the culture.
To help you create your characters, check out the “Character Profile Worksheet” at http://www.spew.sedyn.net/exercisestips/tip06.html and the article “Creating Characters” at http://www.fictionaddiction.net/Characterization/fiction-characters-creation/Print.html. You do not need to answer all of the questions posed in these articles, but the questions can help you start thinking about who your characters will be. To help get some ideas flowing about how your characters could interact, visit the TV shows section of fanfiction.net at http://fanfiction.net/tv to read stories that fans have created using their favorite TV characters.
Project specifics:
The paper must adhere to APA style (found in the APA Quick Reference Guide on the Course Home Page). There is no need to cite in the script, but you do need to cite in the explanations.
Include a cover page, running head, and reference page.
Three to four characters of different cultural backgrounds must be in the script.
The characters must interact in a professional workplace setting.
Provide a script of how they will interact including at least two conversations between three members. This means that while the characters can interact one-on-one, they must also have two group conversations. By doing this you will be able to examine how the various cultures (subcultures) interact.
Your script proposal should be 2-3 pages in length and include sample dialogue and interaction. The following format serves as an example:
An opening paragraph that describes the scene.
Each character’s dialogue on a separate line preceded by the character’s name. For example:
Jose: “When is the annual report due?”
Susan: “Next Friday at 5:00 p.m.”
Include actions in parentheses. For example:
Jose: “When is the annual report due?” (looks through drat report)
Susan: “Next Friday at 5:00 p.m.” (glances at Outlook calendar displayed on computer)
For each character, include a 500-word summary of why he or she acts and reacts in particular ways in the script. In these explanations, you need to include source citations. Potential sources include course textbook, articles, course readings, or other reputable Internet sources.
You must use a minimum of three to five sources — such as articles or books — on the cultures involved in your script. There is no need to cite in the script, but you do need to cite in the explanations.
Grading Criteria:
The project will be graded on the development of the script, the quality of your explanations, and grammar/spelling. See the course syllabus for the specific Final Project grading rubric. Your instructor will be looking at the following areas when grading your project:
